Danny Boyle's vision for the Opening Ceremony leant towards a show presented as a three dimensional film, but one that would read clearly to a stadium audience as well. The scale of the event, both physically and in terms of its international exposure, was present in everyone's minds and so the pressure to get it right weighed heavily on all of us. One of the main challenges for the lighting team was to find a vocabulary that could deal with scenes that varied enormously in their mood and style. The transformation from the Green and Pleasant Land into the Industrial Revolution for example, was an epic set pieces worthy of a Cecil B. de Mille movie, but interspersed were smaller, gentler, more poignant moments and these had to be treated with the same level of detail and delicacy as any of the others.
